Last updated: August 13, 2019

Employment Plus Recruiters know their stuff – and Amanda Dryden is no exception. This high achieving Recruiter is known for her knack to find just the right candidate. Amanda, who works from our Lilydale site, was recently featured in Groundswell, a nursery and garden magazine, for helping place a whopping seven candidates at Humphris Nursery.

Amanda recently took the time to offer us her top 15 interview questions for time poor businesses trying to find the right candidate. “Having worked in recruitment for the best part of 30 years, the process is actually very simple and hasn’t changed over the years,” she said. “Come up with a ‘wish list’ for the person you are seeking. If you want someone that can do ten things, still consider someone that can do eight of them – and remember that Employment Plus may be able to help with the additional two.”

Amanda’s top 15 essential interview questions

1. Tell me about yourself?

This is a simple question that allows the candidate to relax and lets you read their body language.

2. Why do you want this job?

3. Why did you leave your last job

The best answers are honest without being critical or negative towards previous employers.

4. What do you believe are your key strengths? Can you give me an example of each?

5. What would you say are your areas for development or growth?

Keep in mind that Employment Plus can help your candidate with training and development to help secure a job.

6. Where do you see yourself in five years?

7. Tell me about a time when you encountered a difficult customer. What happened, how did you handle it and what was the result?

Look for someone who listens to the customer and isn’t afraid to go the extra mile to resolve their issue.

8. How do you motivate your staff and ensure they reach their KPIs?

If your potential new hire does not have staff reporting to them, you can ask what motivates them to reach their KPIs.

9. Tell me about your problem solving skills and how you use them in the workplace?

10. How would you rate your time management skills out of ten? Can you please give me an example of a time you used your time management skills?

11. How would you rate your customer service skills out of ten? Can you give me an example of when you used your customer service skills?

12. How do you think you work under pressure? Could you please give me an example?

13. Think of a time you have encountered conflict in the workplace. Can you please tell me what happened, how you handled it and what was the result?

You are looking for a candidate who answers coolly and calmly despite describing a situation which may be high in emotion.

14. Have you ever had to deal with conflicting deadlines? If so, how did you decide which task to complete?

15. Do you have any questions you would like to ask?

When a candidate asks questions about the job, the workplace culture and the company’s future, it is a sign they are engaged and curious about the role.
