Youth Program FAQ's

Our Youth Programs give young people the skills, confidence and support they need to make their first successful step onto the career ladder.

Here two of our friendly consultants answer some of your most commonly asked questions.

• What can you do to help me get a job?

  We can help you get a job through working on your pre-employment skills, such as preparing your resume and a cover letter. We'll also help you with your job searching techniques, interview skills and more, such as gaining qualifications to then help you with gaining employment.

• Do I have to look for Full Time Work?

  We can help you look for full-time, part-time or casual work. If you're studying part-time, we can assist in helping you find part-time or casual work. However, if the goal is to achieve full-time work, we can also assist with this.

• Do you send my resume to employers?

  We will always ask you first, and if we have your permission we will send your resume to employers if you meet the requirements for the position and are suitable for the role.

• I’m not sure what to expect in the workforce, what will it be like?

  Starting a new job can be daunting but we will prepare you for entering the workforce through various workshops. You can expect to be working closely with your new team members, learning on the job and completing tasks while you are learning the role.

• How do I report correctly to you?

  You’ll need to report to Centrelink in order to meet your obligations. In order to report correctly to Centrelink, you need to know your reporting date and you'll need to follow the steps that are listed on the Centrelink app.

• Can you help me decide what kind of job to do?

  We can help you decide what job to do by determining what industries suit you best, and then assisting you with relevant upskilling so you can find suitable employment in your chosen fields.

• How will I get a job if I lack work experience?

  We help you gain work experience through volunteer work, or starting in an entry-level role.

• What courses do you have available and can you help me get qualifications/tickets for a job?

  We have lots of courses you can enrol at in Employment Plus, giving you skills for roles in high demand such as retail, hospitality, warehousing, and much more. We’ll help you through the enrolment process and support you the whole way through your course.

• Can I call or email you directly?

  Yes, we are here to support you, so we'll provide you with our contact number and email address so you can contact us directly.

• What is a cover letter and do I really need one?

  A cover letter is a letter you write to your prospective employer outlining your skills and experiences that make you suitable for that role. A cover letter is very important: it’s your opportunity to show the employer your personality, and explains why you would be the best candidate for that role.

• Can you help me with interview skills and what to wear to an interview?

  We prepare you for interviews with a series of workshops, covering topics such as mock interviews, interview skills and how to present yourself to employers. Our B-factor workshop, includes life skills such as appropriate makeup for interviews, appropriate hairstyles and grooming for an interview and personal hygiene. We can also help cover the cost of appropriate interview clothing, so you are fully prepared and ready to go when you do secure a job interview.

• How can you help me with anxiety, lack of motivation or confidence?

  We at Employment Plus understand that anxiety, lack of motivation and confidence is something that everyone experiences through time to time. Your youth consultant is always on hand to support you in overcoming any barriers that come up for you.

• What mental health services are available and can you help me get an appointment?

  In addition to our support, we can also refer you to our allied health team, who are able to offer six free confidential counselling sessions for you to attend, either in person or online. We can also refer you to public counselling services like Headspace and Kim's, and we can help you gaining a mental health plan from your general practitioner to reduce the cost of external counselling services.

• How will I get to work? Can you help me get a driving license? Can get assistance with public transport costs? Can you show me what transport to catch?

  At Employment Plus, we understand that having a driving license is really valuable when looking for employment. If you don't yet have your driver's license, we can support you with going for your learner's test through completing the online Prep Help program. Once completed, we can also help you with driving lessons and can even provide you with fuel vouchers, so you can put fuel in your car to attend to work. If you're using public transport to attend appointments, work or study, we can help you with journey planning by logging on to various Apps to find the best and quickest way for you to travel there.

• Can you help me get organised for paying tax?

  To support you in getting ready to pay tax, we can book you an appointment with Australia post to receive a tax file number. For any other tax related queries, we can refer you to the relevant part of the Australian taxation office.

• Do I have to tell you if anything changes?

  If anything in your circumstances change, we would love for you to let us know. This way, we will understand how to best support you in your journey to finding employment.

• What happens after I get a job?

  We support you for the first six months of your new job with our Post Placement Support program, to make sure everything is OK and to help you stay in the role long-term. During this time, we make sure you have everything you need for work, so you're not missing out or not able to progress in your role. We can also support you with obtaining things like uniforms, transport assistance, tools for work and more.
